Dharma Art

Jamyang’s calligraphy is a linguistic dance of Buddhist images and elements. He encompasses Lord Buddha’s body, spirit and mind in what Lama Zopa Rinpoche called his “Dharma Art.” Boldly experimenting with a variety of mediums and styles, Jamyang’s work is constantly evolving. The startling beauty and detail in Jamyang’s work comes from his deep devotion to the teachings of Buddha and his love for the Tibetan language.

Dharma Art

This is his first solo show in the United States, though his work is in private collections worldwide. Born in Lhasa, Jamyang later worked as senior official for the Government of Sikkim, India and the Tibetan Government in Exile. He currently works for an NGO, the Conservancy of Tibetan Arts and Culture, and holds the world record for creating the longest calligraphy scroll. His calligraphy pieces can be found in the private collections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lodi Gyari Rinpoche, Richard Gere, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and others.

WORLD’S LONGEST CALLIGRAPHY SCROLL

At 163.2 meters, this is the longest calligraphy scroll in the world. It consists of prayers for longevity composed for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama by thirty-two spiritual masters of Tibet. It was written in Japanese sumi ink on handmade Tibetan lokta paper. In 2010, artist Jamyang took six months to write the scroll, which contains 65,000 Tibetan characters, written in different calligraphy styles, including Tsugring, Tsugthung, Tsugma Kyug, and Kyug forms of Umed.

The following list of the lineage masters, whose compositions appear in the scroll, was compiled and published by Tashi Tsering, Director of the Amnye Machen Cultural Institute in Dharamsala, India. The list includes:
