Hedy Klineman employs vibrant color and spiritual imagery to offer keen social insight, a mark of her forty-year career. She depicts the mystical visage and stone Buddha repeatedly like a mantra that coalesces and calms.
In Pop Art-style, she suggests that mass production has left the world awash in identical icons, akin to Warhol’s Brillo boxes. Yet Hedy coyly neutralizes that effect through natural settings–suggesting the ethereal around us. Inspired by the lush landscapes of Barbados and East Hampton, Hedy transports one from a technologically-driven to more meditative world.
Born in Hamburg and raised in Williamsburg, Hedy attended Cooper Union, where she encountered the maximalist, full-canvas Abstract Expressionism that shaped her style. Her work has appeared at the Whitney, Rubin, Hood and Vizcaya Museums and in solo exhibition at the Bridgewater, Lustberg Gallery, Benrimon Contemporary, Dorothy Blau, and Vered Modern. Her paintings are in several international institutions and the private collections of Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Patrick McMullan, Shelley and Donald Rubin, among others.
