Tara (Sanskrit: तारा, tārā; Tib. སྒྲོལ་མ, Dölma) or Ārya Tārā, also known as Jetsun Dölma (Tibetan language:rje btsun sgrol ma) in Tibetan Buddhism, is a female Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who appears as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism.

“The concept of a Great Feminine principle is common to many cultural and religious traditions as the generator and caretaker of life. The images of the Great Feminine vary from tradition to tradition, but the values and qualities of these images are surprisingly consistent. This principle is often referred to as the Great Mother and is considered a protector and guardian of life.
In spiritual traditions in the Himalaya, the female deity Tara has many aspects- each considered to be an embodiment of different aspects of compassionate assistance.”
