Mindfulness, Vipassana Meditation & Buddha’s Middle Way | 1/3/2018

In this video Professor Robert AF Thurman discusses Buddhist Vipassana Meditation, Manjushri, his early days as a Tibetan language translator and studying “Tsongkhapa’s Iron Bow” with Tulku Tara & His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Includes a discusses the traditional Buddhist Mindfulness & Vipassana Meditation and compares Buddha’s Middle Way with Tsong Khapa’s Centralist Path.

“If you meditate a lot, before you have some learning, especially about emptiness and selflessness, then you’re likely to get into a state, because the mind is so powerful, where you will feel comfortable with your self-centeredness intact and it’ll be a kind of escapist state—a quietist type of escapist state.

When they do any kind of meditation where they sort of suspend their thinking process they feel more comfortable. So that’s a good sell and that way can develop a big Dharma center, or a cult, or a group.

The text is known as the Essence Of True Eloquence: Distinguishing the Interpretable from the Definitive Meanings of the Buddha’s Sutra Discourses (Tibetan– Drang nges legs bshad snying po), which is lucid and detailed expansion of the Short Essence of True Eloquence, the poem Jey Tsong Khapa wrote on the morning of the dawning of his full enlightenment in 1398.
