Come experience an evening exploring the rich history of Tibetan Buddhist Chöd music, and participate in an accompanying healing ceremony. Before the musical performance, enjoy a pre-concert talk and guided meditation with notable expert and former Tibetan monk Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam. Then stay for a concert exploring the fusion between traditional Chöd music and original compositions by Heritage Ambassador Ben Stapp, incorporating elements of jazz, classical, and the avant garde, performed by world-renowned musicians.
Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam has dedicated his career to the continuance of Tibetan Buddhist culture and language in modern society. Ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he studied and practiced as a Tibetan monk for ten years. Dr. Chok earned his PhD from the University of Delhi. An author, translator, and language instructor, Dr. Chok served as the Head of the Research and Translation Department at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamshala for 13 years.
BPL Heritage Ambassador Ben Stapp has established himself as a singular voice, both as a tubist and composer. An experienced performer of many styles, his engagements include Ray Anderson, Steven Bernstein, William Parker, Frank London, American Composers Orchestra, TILT, International Contemporary Ensemble, and with Jack Black on “Saturday Night Live.” Stapp was awarded a Jerome Artist commission for his two-hour opera, “Myrrha’s Red Book,” and the Roulette commission for Eight Houses.
