Join us at Tibet House for a four-day retreat led by Phakyab Rinpoche to explore the practice of shamatha meditation.

Friday, July 22 through Monday, July 25 (full class schedule below) | $275 | In-person at Tibet House US

In New York, suffering from gangrene and diabetes, Phakyab Rinpoche cured himself through the intensive practice of Healing Meditation. Following the Dalai Lama’s guidance, Rinpoche made the decision to teach and transmit these healing practices.

Rinpoche developed a specific practice of Shamatha (or “calm-abiding meditation”) which he called the 9-Step Healing Shamatha. This complete practice is done in three phases: 1) a phase of purification of the 5 chakras, 2) a phase of concentration to settle the practitioner’s mind, and 3) a phase of practice of both compassion and emptiness called dissolution.

Everyone can start the 9-Step Shamatha practice at the right time in their lives and continue at their own pace. This 4-day in-person retreat at Tibet House will cover Level 1 of the program and is a great opportunity to practice with and learn from accomplished teacher Phakyab Rinpoche, who has accumulated many years of experience with Healing Shamatha and other forms of meditation.

This Shamatha Level 1 retreat is open to practitioners of all levels. Beginners as well as those who have accumulated a number of hours of practice will benefit from these special teachings. In addition to increasing mental focus and calm, Shamatha meditation allows for the mastery of the mind, leading to a beneficial effect on the physical body. It is an accessible meditation practice, whether one identifies as a Buddhist or not. Teachings will be in Tibetan with English translation.

Note: In the event of proven illness, this practice does not in any way replace medicine or other healing modalities. It is an additional element promoting the healing process.

* Limited financial aid is available for those in need. Please email beata@thus.org to inquire.

Class Schedule:

  • Friday (7/22), Saturday (7/23), and Sunday (7/24):
  • Monday (7/25):

Phakyab Rinpoche was born in 1966 in Tibet, ordained as a monk at the age of 13. In 1994 he was recognized by the XIV Dalai Lama as the eighth rebirth of Phakyab Rinpoche. When faced with severe health problems that required the amputation of one of his legs, he consulted with the Dalai Lama, who encouraged him to rely on spiritual practices and faith to heal himself. “You will teach the world how to heal,” H.H. told him. From this experience, Rinpoche wrote his book, Meditation Saved My Life. Currently living in New York and teaching worldwide, he is the Spiritual Leader for The Healing Buddha Foundation. The Foundation houses and educates young Tibetan children while supporting Tibetan single mothers through their sponsorship program. As a member of the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche teaches spiritual healing throughout the United States, France, and the world.
